Saviors in the Night ( Unter Bauern: Retter in Der Nacht)

Summary

Based on the memoirs of Marga Spiegel, "Saviors in the Night" mourns the effects of the war on families both Jewish and German, and celebrates those who had the courage and heart to do what was right no matter the consequences. Moments of love and connection puncture the overwhelmingly stale air of fear, reminding us that goodness can be found in even the most horrendous circumstances.

Westphalia, Germany, 1943: Unwilling to resign himself and his family to the fate of the death camps, Siegmund Spiegel sends his wife and daughter into hiding with an old friend. Marga and Karin are able to blend in on the Acshoff’s family farm but Seigmund must wander the forests by bicycle, seeking shelter from the select few he thinks he can trust.

With stunning cinematography and superb acting, the film subtly captures the details of life in rural Germany during the Second World War.
